Eating with the Seasons
In Ayurveda, food isn't just fuel — it's one of the most powerful daily influences on how we feel. And just as we change our wardrobe with the weather, Ayurveda invites us to gently adjust how we eat as the seasons turn.
Why seasons matter
Each season carries its own qualities. Late autumn and winter tend to be cool, dry and light — Vata qualities. Summer is hot and sharp — Pitta. Late winter and spring can feel heavy and damp — Kapha. When we eat foods with the opposite qualities, we naturally stay in balance.
Simple seasonal shifts
In the cool months, lean toward warm, moist, nourishing meals: soups, stews, cooked grains and warming spices. In summer, favor cooling, hydrating foods: fresh fruit, leafy greens and lighter fare. In spring, lighten up with less heavy, less oily food to balance the season's natural dampness.
Listen to your body
These are starting points, not strict rules. The real skill is noticing how different foods make you feel in each season, and adjusting with kindness. A consultation can help you tailor seasonal eating to your own constitution.
